Internet security experts have warned that cybercriminals are taking advantage of the swine flu buzz to sell counterfeit drugs and steal credit card and personal details from unsuspecting consumers. F-Secure, an internet security company, has made a list of 146 swine flu-related internet sites that have been registered over the last few days by scammers looking to collect ’donations’ and peddle malware, fake pills and fake swine flu survival guides. Internet security experts have warned that cybercriminals are taking advantage of the swine flu buzz to sell counterfeit drugs and steal credit card and personal details from unsuspecting consumers. F-Secure, an internet security company, has made a list of 146 swine flu-related internet sites that have been registered over the last few days by scammers looking to collect ’donations’ and peddle malware, fake pills and fake swine flu survival guides. McAfee, one of the leading security software makers, said that domain registrations of websites that included "swine" in their names were up by thirty fold. One of the sites, noswineflu.com at the time of launch tried to con readers into buying a PDF called "Swine Flu Survival Guide" for 19.95 dollars. There has also been a surge in spam campaigns exploiting the flu threat which contains internet viruses and offer victims the opportunity to buy counterfeit pills of Tamiflu that is said to eradicate the flu. When victims purchase any of these products by the spammers, their credit cards details are easily stolen even before they purchase the unsuspecting counterfeit drugs posing great health risks. It is no surprise that some fake websites will attempt to use well known pharmaceutical brands to sell these counterfeit products, posing great health risks to consumers, while damaging brand values of companies and ultimately leading to deteriorated profit margins. Brand owners must ensure that they have appropriate online security measures to monitor the abuse of their brand to ensure they protect both their customers and business. |
