Applying to register a domain name

Any dot-FR domain name you register has to be unique. A .FR domain name can be registered only once and the first-come-first-served principle applies.

Any person or organisation can apply to register a dot-FR domain name, regardless of where they live or are based. There are some conditions.

1. For individual : All individuals with a postal address in France are eligible to register .FR domain names.

2. For business entity : Local presence by either a French company number or a trademark protected in France.

3. If a trademark is used, the trademark must have been registered for at least 6 months.

4. Administrative Contact must be either a legal entity or physical person with residency in France.

5. Registrations are carried out and validated afterwards by the NIC. A registration may be withdrawn by the NIC if it during the validation is found that the company or trademark number does not justify the registration.

6. Should this happen the Partner will be asked to provide a correct company or trademark number. If a valid number is not provided the registration will be withdrawn by the NIC. The registration fee will not be returned.

Check whether the name you have thought of is still available

To do this, you need to use the Who(Is) service on this website. On the homepage, you will see the option ‘Is the dot-FR domain name still available?’ Enter the .FR domain name you are interested in and click on ‘Check’. The ‘Is’ service will then tell you the status of the domain name. If the status is ‘Available’, it is available for you to register.

There is a French presence requirement and administrative contact address must be in France; some other restrictions on some of the specific subdomains
